In 2015 the Attorney General Office [Fiscalía General de la República] of El Salvador detained 90 people involved in an international network specialized in trafficking with firearms, grenades and ammunition. Two Nicaraguan brothers, Aaron Noel and Darwin José Ponce Alvarado, were accused of smuggling the firearms and grenades from Guatemala, Honduras and a small portion from Nicaragua. The alleged coordinator of the criminal network was Medardo Arana, a leader of the Mara Salvatrucha criminal gang.
